Hello friends,
One of my favorite leased plots will be up for sale in early spring 2025. I currently grow in my backyard and three other people's yards on a total of 1/4 acre. The plot I am losing is larger and makes up about a third of my total growing space where I grow both perennials and annuals. Such is urban life, growing on leased land. Losing a space you've put a lot of work into is always a possibility and is never farm from my mind. I am determined to make the most of this situation and take the opportunity to find space closer to my home base. If you are curious, please read more below, and reach out with more questions!
What I Hope to Find in a Plot of Land
The non-negotiables:
-
Water access
-
Relatively flat land with no major landscaping that must be removed
-
Available this summer (2024) for land preparation and weed mitigation

Ideal qualities of a potential farm plot:
-
Frost free water tap
-
At least 60ft x 60ft of open, contiguous space
-
Fenced
-
Not going up for sale for at least 5 years

Other details:
-
I pay the water I use by metering. I pay the highest usage rate first and move down the tiers per 1000 gallon and round up.
-
Lease compensation comes in the form of mowing, weed management, a flower share, or an agreed upon amount of monetary compensation. I am open to other types of arrangements as well.
-
I need access year round. I overwinter some of my crops.
-
I use organic growing practices. If you see me spraying, it is either foliar feed, beneficial nematodes or natural pest control such as bacterial pesticides, clays, or salts to deter bugs.
-

Types of land/spaces I can utilize:
-
Residential lots with no HOAs or covenants that would restrict small scale farming
-
Church lots
-
Undeveloped land/ empty lots
-
Previous horse properties
-
Rental properties
